Kazakh Film, the state-owned film company of Kazakhstan, signed a cooperation deal with American movie producer and director Chuck Russell to help finance a 3D production of ‘1001 Arabian Nights’, Variety reported on Tuesday.
Russell will shoot his adaptation of the Asian and Middle Eastern collection of folk tales in the vast Central Asian republic next year.
The Kazakh movie firm is thought to be investing $10 million into the $70 million project, the entertainment news web site said.
Working with the Kazakh movie company is like working in Hollywood in the 1950s and 60s, Russell told a news conference after the signing.
“Kazakh Film is like Hollywood studios were in the 1950s and 1960s, when they were discovering new faces and supporting young, novice directors,” Variety reported the producer as telling the journalists in Almaty.
Shooting will start in June 2012.
One of the sets, a full-scale medieval period city, will be built around 120 miles from Almaty city in south Kazakhstan.
Other sets will be located in the country’s Altyn Emel national park, famous for its desert and rock formations and located near the Kazakh-Chinese border.
President Nursultan Nazarbayev has invested heavily in Kazakhstan’s film industry over the past two years, providing the company with state-of-the-art studios to attract big foreign productions to the country.
